    Bayern entered the match day on top of the Bundesliga. That's now history - they slumped to a draw in Hamburg, and find themselves two points back. Hamburg's Jacopo Sala (second from r.) scored his first Bundesliga goal in the 19th minute, and Ivica Olic's second-half goal wasn't enough to give Bayern the three points they needed to keep pace with Dortmund.

    Schalke's costly draw

    New addition Mohamed Zidan (l.) was the hero for Mainz as his 15th minute goal put Schalke on the back foot in the first half. The Royal Blues would come back in the second stanza, getting a Chinedu Obasi goal on 59 minutes, but could not find a winner. The draw puts Schalke two points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund.

    Gladbach also held

    Borussia Mönchengladbach's afternoon in Wolfsburg also ended in a draw. The Foals, who dictated play for long stretches in the first half but could only draw 0-0, have not won in Wolfsburg in nearly 14 years. Gladbach are now in fourth place on 40 points.

    Dortmund hold serve

    Dortmund were well aware of the chasing pack on Friday night, determined not to be caught. The champs won 2-0 away to Nuremberg in the bitter cold, extending their undefeated run to 14 games. Captain Sebastian Kehl and the substitute Lucas Barrios (second from r.) were the goalscorers for Dortmund.

    Leverkusen fell still further behind the top four after an eventful 2-2 home draw to Stuttgart. Stefan Kiessling and Simon Rolfes scored for Leverkusen, but their goals were evened by Stuttgart's Julian Schieber und Martin Harnik. The sides were also even at ten men by the end - Bayer's Michal Kadlec (r.) and Christian Molinaro of Stuttgart were sent off.

    Germany's capital club lost their third on the trot under new coach Michael Skibbe, who took over in the winter break. It may have little to do with him - they lost 1-0 at home to Hanover on Saturday, but have not won since October. Mohammed Abdellaoue scored from distance to give Hanover a win their coach, Mirko Slmoka, described as "lucky."

    Augsburg scrape a point

    Bundesliga rookies Augsburg battled their way to a draw at Hoffenheim in a game that wasn't pretty, but offered plenty of action. Augsburg striker Sascha Mölders broke a nearly 380-minute scoring drought to put his team up after 30 minutes, but goals from Peniel Mlapa and Sejad Salihovic gave Hoffenheim the lead back. Sebastian Langkamp (c.) brought his team level eighteen minutes from time.

    After five draws in the Bundesliga on Saturday, Bremen and Freiburg added to the tally on Sunday as their match finished at 2-2. Bremen had plenty of chance to celebtrate as Claudio Pizarro scored his 14th and 15th goals on the season, but his brace was canceled out by goals from Cedrick Makiadi and Jonathan Schmid for the home side.

    Cologne and Kaiserslautern's match on Sunday night was not played at a particularly high level and looked destined to be the weekend's seventh draw. But Odise Roshi (r.) had other ideas. The 20-year-old Albanian scored his first Bundesliga goal just 99 seconds after coming in as a sub, allowing the Billy goats to rise to 9th in the table as a result.

    As hosts, the red-and-whites automatically qualified for the European Championship. Poland achieved its best result to date back in 1972, when the team won gold at the Olympic Games in Munich. The team has only taken part in one European Championships so far - in 2008. But the Polish team went out in the early stages.

    Like fellow hosts Poland, the Ukrainian side qualified automatically for Euro 2012. After the breakup of the former Soviet Union, Ukraine has failed to qualify for the championships. Ukraine sits at 48th place in the world rankings. Their captain is Anatoli Tymoschtschuk, who plays for Bayern Munich.

    Germany

    The team led by trainer Joachim Löw was the first to qualify for Euro 2012. Ten wins in ten games is their impressive tally from the qualification rounds. That's why the world number three team is one of the favorites for the European title this time round. The German side has already won the European title three times (1972, 1980, 1996) and made it to six European finals.

    Spain

    The Spanish team is the reigning world and European champion - which says a lot in itself. Oh, and they are also top of the world rankings. They collected the European title back in 1964. Their nickname "La Furia Roja" means "red fury" in English and harks back to the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, at which Spain won a silver medal.

    England

    The "Three Lions" are among the oldest national teams in the world. Their biggest achievement to date was becoming world champions in 1966 on home soil. In Euro 1996, England lost to Germany in the semi-finals. At the last European Championships held in Austria and Switzerland, the English team didn't even manage to qualify. They are ranked seventh in the world.

    The Netherlands

    Their biggest success was winning the European title in 1988 - the Dutch have taken part in eight European Championships. In August, 2011, the team topped the FIFA world rankings for the first time (they are currently second). The side is known as the orange eleven or "oranje," because of their traditional orange shirts and the House of Orange - the Dutch monarchy.

    The so-called Squadra Azzurra (the azure blues) is one of the most successful national teams in football. Italy has won the World Cup four times, most recently in 2006. They also became European Champions in 1968 when Italy was hosting the tournament. The team, ranked sixth in the world, easily qualified for Euro 2012. The Italian side is always among the favorites for the title.

    France has slipped to 15th place in the world rankings and lately the team has grabbed headlines more often because of football scandals than sporting achievement. But the formidable French were crowned world champions in 1998, and European Champions in 1984 and 2000. In the qualification stages for Euro 2012, the team came through as group winners on the last day.

    Ireland

    For the first time in 23 years, Ireland has qualified for the European Championships. The Irish faced Estonia in the playoffs, and came through (4-0, 1-1). The team, coached by Giovanni Trapattoni, sits at number 25 in the world rankings and is therefore seen as an outside chance for Euro 2012. The last time Ireland got through to the final stages of a major tournament was the 2002 World Cup.

    The Czech Republic

    The Czechs qualified for Euro 2012 after beating Montenegro (2-0, 1-0). The Czechs' biggest triumph came in Euro 1996, when they lost to Germany in extra time in the championship final. Since then, Tomas Rosicky has captained his team to every European Championships.

    Croatia

    The "Kockasti" ("the checkers") beat Turkey in the playoffs (3-0, 0-0). It's their fourth time in the European Championships. Their best performance to date was in the 1998 World Cup in France, when they came third. Four Bundesliga players are in the Croatian line-up: Ivica Olic, Daniel Pranjic (who both play for Bayern Munich), Mario Mandzukic (Wolfsburg) and Ivan Perisic (Borussia Dortmund).

    Sweden

    Sweden's heyday was over 50 years ago, when the team was runner-up in the 1958 World Cup and won the gold medal at the 1948 Olympic Games. The Swedish team has taken part in four European Championships, and the country hosted the tournament in 1992. At the moment, the Swedes are placed 14th in the world rankings.

    Denmark

    Denmark were crowned European Champions back in 1992. In addition, the so-called "Danish Dynamites" know their way around European Championship finals. Euro 2012 will be their eighth such tournament in a row. In the qualification stages, the team, ranked 10th in the world, beat favorites Portugal to emerge top of group H.

    Russia

    The heyday of Russian football was during Soviet times when the USSR national team won the European Championships in 1960 and were runners-up on three occasions. After the break-up of the Soviet Union, Russia took part in the European Championships for the first time in 1996. Since then, they have only missed out in Euro 2000.

    Greece's greatest achievement was their surprise win of the Euro 2004 title under German Otto Rehhagel, who coached the team from 2001 to 2010. It's the Greeks' fourth appearance in the European Championships. They are 8th in the world rankings. Greek football was recentlyrocked by a betting scandal.

    The Portuguese were the last team to qualify for Euro 2012, to be held in Poland and Ukraine. In the playoffs, the team, captained by Cristiano Ronaldo, beat Bosnia-Herzegovina (6-2, 0-0). At number eight in the world rankings, Portugal has potential - but the team has never won a title, either on a European or a world level.
